The golden ribbon is the international symbol of childhood cancer, representing strength, courage and resilience. It pays tribute to and supports all children, young people and families affected by the disease.
Despite being a rare disease, and with 370 cases diagnosed in Portugal each year, it continues to be the main cause of death from illness among children and adolescents. The good news is that the overall 5-year survival rate is 84.7%.
The month of September has gained prominence and aims to promote greater knowledge about the disease, with the aim of alerting and raising awareness of the importance of knowing how to identify the signs and symptoms, which are essential for an early diagnosis that allows more lives to be saved.
The resources and information available to help adults (parents, grandparents, etc.) explain cancer to children are scarce, which justifies the relevance of creating a tool adapted for children over 3 years old, accessible, appealing and facilitating communication between adults and children.
“Os superpoderes da Júlia” is a children's audiobook from the Portuguese League Against Cancer, with the support of MSD (Merck Sharp & Dohme), which shares the story of a happy, courageous and lively girl and a fighting father who face cancer with love.
