The history of war is the history of violence. War historians are still unraveling the many layers, logics and dimensions of violence as it is inflicted and endured in the context of military conflict.
On the other hand, historians of violence have recently made important contributions to the theoretical and empirical framework of violence as a concept, as a political instrument, as a social practice and as a cultural phenomenon.
Over the course of two days, the annual conference of Society for the History of War will bring together in Lisbon around 100 experts in the history of war and history of violence, coming from various parts of the world, with the aim of exploring, discussing and deconstructing different empirical, methodological and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of war and violence.
