São Tomé and Príncipe has a diverse plant heritage, with different forest formations, from humid mountain forests and mangroves to drier savannas. These forests are home to exceptional flora and fauna diversity, providing considerable resources in timber and non-timber forest products, which are of great socioeconomic and environmental importance, specifically for improving the living conditions of local populations. However, social pressure has been growing for the indiscriminate exploitation of forests, with a very negative impact in environmental and economic terms. It is clear that the growing and increasingly competing demands for food, energy and urbanization are accelerating the degradation of natural resources and ecosystems. In this sense, through international cooperation, within the framework of the Restoration Initiative (TRI- The Restoration Initiative), the Directorate of Forests and Biodiversity (DFB), received technical and financial support from FAO, with funding from GEF, to develop the first forest restoration plan in the country, called: National Forest and Landscape Restoration Plan – An Assessment of Restoration Opportunities. This document aims to provide the country with an instrument that establishes guidelines for the restoration of forests and landscapes, ensuring the sustainable use and conservation of forest resources for socio-economic development.
