Program:

Speakers:
Duarcides Ferreira Mariosa
(Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas) and Technical Chamber for Conservation and Protection of Natural Resources)

Theme: The water issue in the context of climate change: Threat, risk, vulnerability and resilience.

Summary: Climate change has been attributed mainly to human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and intensive agriculture, which have significantly increased greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. As a result, rainfall distribution has become more irregular, with extreme weather events such as prolonged droughts, heavy rains and more frequent and intense storms, resulting in floods and landslides in some regions, and water shortages in others. More extreme and variable weather conditions have increased local territorial vulnerability, especially in areas with precarious infrastructure, lack of adequate urban planning and marginalized communities.

Orandi Mina Falsarella
(Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas)

Theme: Water, a sustainable resource: how to help the decision-making process of water resource managers

Summary: It presents and discusses, in the context of sustainable development, the economic, social and environmental impacts of having clean and treated water, in the quantity and quality necessary for the survival of living beings and for the development of productive activities. It presents examples of actions by Watershed Plans that can contribute to minimize negative impacts and maintain or expand positive ones. It presents applications of Information and Communication Technologies that, if implemented, can contribute to provide information and subsidies to help the decision-making process of water resource managers, with the purpose of making water a sustainable resource.
