WORKSHOP – HAPPINESS AND WELL-BEING IN HIGHER EDUCATION
The Workshop held at UAL, on April 16, 2024, on “Happiness and Well-being in Higher Education” was facilitated by the renowned speaker Doctor Helena Marujo, Associate Professor at ISCSP-ULisboa, Member of the Council of the International Association of Positive Psychology (IPPA) and Researcher at the Center for Administration and Public Policies – CAPP. It was attended by 1st year Communication Sciences students, Professor Carmen Monereo, who made her class available for this event and as an essential complement to her academic program.
According to Helena Marujo, Happiness, scientifically investigated through Positive Psychology, is achieved by taking care of mental, physical and spiritual health, being active and participatory citizens in collective life and capable of feeling good about the life we have. In the perception that each person has about their position in life, culture is very important, giving us the context of the values in which we live, the objectives, expectations and standards in their quality of life.
Positive Psychology enhances human virtues and seeks ways to be happier through good emotions. But it was also with negative emotions that, over time, we survived as a species.
Gratitude is closely associated with Happiness, an emotion of elevation, where each day is a new opportunity to feel gratitude for everything we have achieved and can offer to others.
What we pay attention to grows! The construction of our Happiness always passes through our consciousness, through what we focus on, with the construction of a profile of positive emotions, a subjective dimension of Happiness. Giving meaning to life through a purpose is essential, as well as establishing quality connections with others, whether with our partners, families, friends, co-workers, neighbors or other people in our community, all of which can contribute to Happiness and Resilience. Therefore, taking measures to build, maintain and strengthen our relationships is important for our immunity, regeneration and building our Happiness.
