World Lung Cancer Day is celebrated and in this context, the Portuguese League Against Cancer during the month of August aims to:
- Inform and raise awareness among the population about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis;
- Make known the risk factors;
- Contribute to reducing the number of new cases of the disease.
Lung cancer is the most common and deadliest cancer in the world.
In Portugal, more than 6000 new cases appear each year, making it the 3rd most common cancer in men and women. It is the 1st cause of death from cancer and responsible for more than 5000 deaths per year.
It is known that the main risk factor for lung cancer is SMOKING: between 85% and 90% of cases are smokers or ex-smokers.
Smokers live, on average, 10 years less than non-smokers.
The best way to prevent it is to stop smoking (or never start)!
Take this step for yourself and those you care about.
