Instituto de Estudos Superiores Militares – Since the academic year 2007/2008, the Autonomous University of Lisbon, through the Department of International Relations, has drawn up a protocol with the IESM – Instituto de Estudos Superiores Militares. This protocol, which remains in force, allows UAL to teach the academic part of the Master's in Peace and War Studies at that institution, incorporated into the Joint Staff Course, a course aimed at senior officers from the three branches of the Armed Forces.

Recently, in the academic year 2010/2011, the Autonomous University of Lisbon, through the Department of International Relations, signed a protocol with the National Defense Institute. The main purpose of this initiative is to develop and deepen inter-institutional relations in the field of scientific cooperation and research in the fields of security and national defense.
