Cervical Cancer Prevention Month

Within the scope of the Ambition Project, in the CAMPUS activity, HEALTHY Autónoma/ESEJD, together with the “Connect yourself to life” initiative of the Portuguese League for the fight against cancer, this January promotes the dissemination and prevention of Colon Cancer of the uterus.

During the month of January, the Portuguese League Against Cancer the Prevention of Cervical Cancer, with the aim of raising awareness of women's health, encouraging behaviors for its prevention and early diagnosis.

Cervical cancer always originates from infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV);

HPV is easily transmitted through skin-to-skin contact and sexual contact;

HPV can cause several types of cancer and genital diseases in women and men;

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO PREDICT, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT THE DISEASE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS VIRUS;

Visit your doctor regularly;

I undergo cervical cancer screening (Pap Smear Test) and/or HPV-DNA test;

Get vaccinated against HPV (it is part of the National Vaccination Program*);

Have protected sex.

  • free for girls and boys aged 10 to 17;

Goals:

  • Know the risk factors and symptoms of cervical cancer;
  • Raise awareness of the importance of prevention and early detection;
  • Promote demystification and the stigma associated with the disease.

 

Why?

Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common gynecological cancer in Portuguese women. It is estimated that in Portugal, during 2020, 865 new cases emerged and 379 women died from this disease (Globocan, 2020).

 

What is it?

Cervical cancer always originates from high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This virus is easily transmitted through simple sexual contact. It is a very common infection – 75% of individuals under 50 years of age have or have had the infection. Anyone can be infected, regardless of risk behavior.

 

How is it prevented?

The best protection is to associate screening (Pap smear test) with vaccination.
