The absence of justice, in its various expressions, does not provide safe environments and, ultimately, does not lead to the establishment of a climate of peace in society.
It is intended that the conference will apply the concepts, techniques and instruments of Conflict Management and Resolution, highlighting the capabilities and limitations of each one of them. The conference will address violent and non-violent but potentially destabilizing conflicts between and within states and nations and, therefore, address issues of power and the interests associated with them.
We want the communications to address a wide range of activities, from conflict prevention to peacebuilding to violence management, security sector reform and institution building; in conflicts, both intra and inter States, whatever: their origin (religious, ethnic, etc.), the role of informal actors and external actors, the importance of these conflicts in the different regional political orders and the methods and strategies adopted (mediation, use of force, truth commissions, second-line diplomacy, etc.) to mitigate disagreements. We are particularly interested in understanding how these different aspects can affect the processes of achieving and maintaining peace.
Communications may address both theoretical and methodological as well as empirical issues of conflict resolution, the latter centered on case studies.
We are particularly interested in the case studies a) being of conflicts relevant to the geostrategic interest of Portugal (for example in North Africa and the Sahel), for the regions where they are located, or with global relevance, b) illustrating the use of different conflict resolution concepts, techniques and instruments, c) or that address the role of multilateral organizations with a security mandate.
The conference is organized around thematic panels for conflicts in the regional areas of Africa, the Greater Middle East and in Other Geographic Areas and for theoretical aspects of conflict resolution and peace studies.
Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in one of two formats: in the JANUS.NET journal, e-journal of International Relations (bilingual, SCOPUS) or in a book published by UAL/OBSERVARE.
Communications in Portuguese or English are accepted.
Proposals must be sent with:
