ACTION FOR HAPINESS – Altruistic August – Giving

Selfless August - Giving

Do good things for others

If you want to feel good, doing good is a great starting point.

Helping and being kind not only contributes to the happiness of others, it can also help us feel happier ourselves! Studies have shown that when we do nice things, it can literally give our brain a boost, activating its “reward centers” and making us feel good. It can also distract us from our own worries.

Giving and kindness also help us feel connected to others, which is important for our well-being and helps build stronger communities and a happier society for everyone.

There are many different ways to give and help others!

Scientific studies show that helping others can contribute to our happiness in many ways. These include: feeling more positive emotions and life satisfaction; increase our sense of meaning and increase our self-confidence. It can also reduce stress and help us feel calmer. Some studies have revealed that people who volunteer regularly are more hopeful and have fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, and can even live longer. Not all acts of helping increase the happiness we feel – to maximize the benefits, it is important that we have chosen whether and how to help; that we can see or feel that it will have a positive impact; and that helps us feel more connected to others.

So, if you want to feel good, find ways to do good!

Reflection: When did you choose to give or help others and feel happier? What contributed to this?
