C5 | SEXUAL AND GENDER DIVERSITY AND THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONALS IN COMBATING DISCRIMINATION

5 Jan 2023 - 6:30 pm

Auditorium 1

online

Despite Portugal having an advanced legal framework in terms of sexual and reproductive rights, studies consistently show the insufficiency of public policies in eliminating discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ population. This phenomenon can be seen in different areas and the field of health care is no exception. In this intervention, we will present the phenomenon of prejudice and discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ population, with particular emphasis on childhood and youth, as they present particular challenges that are characterized by the intersection of other factors such as age. We will introduce some essential terminology that will guide the reflection on the monitoring of LGBTIQ+ children and young people and we will present some results of ongoing studies that allow us to think about the national context from the needs of children and young people, concluding with some reflections on the role of professionals in the Psychology and how to develop an adequate professional intervention.
