Housing
UAL does not provide accommodation for students, but we try to compile information about residences, flats, and hostels. You will find a list here.
The Erasmus Students Associations will also help you find accommodation (see below).
Visa
Students coming from the EU do not require a visa. Other international students will be sent an acceptance letter, which they should take to the nearest Portuguese Embassy or Consulate to apply for a visa. For additional information please check here.
Insurance
Students coming from the EU should obtain the European Health Insurance Card.
For additional information on how to obtain it please check here.
Please note that this card is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover private healthcare or lost or stolen property. It does not guarantee free services. Each country’s health system is different and in Portugal, you will be required to pay 20 Euros if you go to a hospital for emergency treatment.
Non-EU students are strongly advised to take health and general travel insurance prior to coming to Portugal.
Portuguese Language Courses
Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa provides free Portuguese classes to International students. For students coming to study in the 1 st semester or the whole academic year, we offer a two week intensive course, which typically starts in the middle of September. There are also extensive courses in both semesters. Students have a choice of attending one course in just one semester (6 ECTS) or two courses, one per semester, thus gaining 12 ECTS if they complete the courses successfully.
If you are interested in attending a course, please send us an email to erasmus@autonoma.pt indicating your level in Portuguese to help us plan the class numbers. Please be aware that students are expected to have a B1 level in Portuguese prior to starting their classes with us. We do not require a certificate.
Assessment
At UAL we have two types of assessment: One is the ongoing assessment, which means that students need to attend at least 75% of classes and do all the course work required by the teachers (individual and group work, tests etc.).
If students pass this ongoing assessment (10 is the minimum pass grade, the maximum is 20), they don’t need to sit the final exams and they complete the subject “early” comparing with other students who need to sit the final exams. If students fail, or wish to improve grades from the ongoing assessment component, they will be required to sit exams.
Choosing subjects
The Erasmus students are allowed to choose subjects from a maximum of 2 different degrees (you can choose subjects from 2 different departments). This measure is to avoid the overlap of schedules of the Erasmus students.
The schedules are normally known a few days before classes begin. If there is an overlap you will have the option to study the classes in the evening, with the exception of Architecture.
Courses taught in English in 2024-2025
For the academic year 2025-26 is extremely likely that the number of courses will increase.
Change of subjects
The students can change the subjects that they chose until 1 week after the beginning of classes. .
Useful contacts and websites
The associations listed below offer extremely useful assistance in all sorts of practical matters and will help you settle in Lisbon. They organize many activities and assist international students upon their arrival in Lisbon, including providing buddy systems and assistance with housing.

We look forward to receiving your applications and to welcome you to Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL). The International Office is at your disposal should you need assistance or further information.
Incoming Staff
Though we welcome visitors, we are a small office with limited resources. Thus, and due to the high number of requests for incoming staff mobility, we are forced to limit the number of representatives (2) per academic year, per partner institution. This does not apply to Staff Mobility for Teaching, whose acceptance depends on the decision of the individual departments.
We will not issue invitation letters to incoming staff on Erasmus+ mobility with the exception of those coming from countries in which visa for short stays is required.
Appointments only with previous confirmation by email
