Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Autonomous University of Lisbon. He is also a researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations at Universidade Nova de Lisboa; visiting professor at IE University, Spain; non-resident researcher at the National Defense Institute; and co-founder and main observer of OPEN – Observatory of National Foreign Policy. Professor Magalhães specializes in International Relations Theory (developing a new realistic approach – three-dimensional realism) and in international security (conflict management, nuclear proliferation, security in Europe and Northeast Asia). 

 

Previously, Professor Magalhães was Professor of International Relations at the Korean University of Foreign Studies, South Korea; “Fellow” of the Japan Foundation at the University of Tokyo, Japan; “ARI Fellow” at Korea University, South Korea; “Taiwan Fellow” at National Taiwan University, Taiwan; North Korean policy adviser to Portugal's Mission to the United Nations, 1718 Committee, USA; associate researcher at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, USA; instructor in the Masters (MSt) in International Relations at the University of Cambridge, UK; visiting researcher at the Department of Political Science, Seoul National University, South Korea; visiting researcher at the School of International and Public Affairs and the Department of Political Science at Columbia University, USA; Visiting Fellow at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; FCT fellow at Cambridge University; KGSP fellow at Sogang University, South Korea; and affiliate of the General Directorate for European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal.

 

Professor Magalhães holds a Master (MPhil) in International Relations and a Doctor (PhD) in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge.
