SCIENCE AND VOICES FROM THE AMAZON – DIALOGUES IN PORTUGAL

7 Jul 2025 - 14:30

Auditorium 1 and Online

Between November 10 and 21, 2025, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (Conference of the Parties – COP30) will take place in Belém do Pará. It is a historic event that will bring together world leaders, scientists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and representatives of civil society to discuss solutions to the climate crisis. More than a global stage to reaffirm the role of Brazil and the European Union in climate negotiations, COP-30 is a unique opportunity to put the populations at the center of the discussions. After all, these populations are the guardians of the forest and waters, responsible for preserving the ecosystems that sustain all of humanity.

With this vision, UFPA launched the movement “Science and Voices of the Amazon at COP-30”, a series of inclusive, accessible and democratic events with the aim of promoting discussions within the scope of COP30 and, also, for local actors to have an active participation in the climate negotiation process, increasing the visibility of the responses regarding global warming generated in the region.

In this context, international academic cooperation is a powerful ally in the reflection raised by the social outcry in search of solutions to the climate crisis, taking into account that the urgency in building alternatives to the climate crisis has also been a strong concern of the European Union and Portugal.

Thus, through the Technical-Scientific Cooperation Agreement signed in February/2025 between the Federal University of Pará and Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, the proposal to hold this event in Lisbon arises, to bring together the Portuguese-Brazilian community and invite those present to think and debate together the climate issues that directly affect the Brazilian Amazon and indirectly Portugal and the world.

An important voice stands out in this fight, that of the Portuguese-Brazilian and Amazonian singer Fafá de Belém, co-organizer of this event and who has been an important defender of the preservation of the culture and riches of the forest, who will lead the Magna Conference and give a very rich presentation of Amazonian and Portuguese musical culture.
