The Master's in Applied Communication at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa is a multidisciplinary composition oriented towards the job market. It aims to provide advanced and specialized training in Digital Communication, which, today, involves mastering a set of skills from other fields of knowledge, such as digital storytelling techniques, digital marketing and e-governance.

Classes take place in the Communication Labs, a space with multiplatform equipment capable of responding to the specific crossmedia needs of this area.

Theoretical-practical teaching is complemented by in-depth reflection on some of the major themes of Communication Sciences, including the relationship between Communication and Public Space, Media Literacy and, because we are in Portugal, the understanding of the Portuguese media market in conjunction with the lusophone.

The Board of Directors of the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES) decided to accredit, for a period of 6 years, the Master in Applied Communication of the Autonomous University of Lisbon, with effect from 07/31/2019.

"THE 1st semester normally takes place between March and June, and the 2nd semester between October and February. Classes take place after work (between 18:30 and 22:30), 2 times per week, usually on consecutive days.”

 

    SYLLABUS

    - Bruno Reis

    At the end of the UC the student should be able to;

    • plan an academic investigation;
    • to carry out a scientific approach to a previously defined theme;
    • use computer tools that assist in investigative praxis.

    - Victor Tomé

    • Understand the concept of Media Education / Media Literacy in the current context of media convergence;
    • Identify activities suitable for the development of the operationalization of Education for the Media/Media Literacy;
    • Critically analyze multimodal media content;
    • Understand the importance of acquiring Media Literacy skills for the exercise of an active and inclusive citizenship in the 21st century.

    - Hélder Prior

    • Understand and describe the historical and social transformations of the idea of Public Space;
    • Critically reflect on the concepts “public”, “private”, “public opinion”, “civil society” and “democratic deliberation”;
    • Discuss the relationship between Politics and Communication in contemporary societies, with special emphasis on the role of digital communication in the configuration of the new Public Space;
    • Analyze new modes of communication and interaction in public space and critically assess their social impact;
    • Develop research skills.

    - Luís Lima

    • Thinking about the contemporary user experience through new communication technologies;
    • Acquire skills for the conceptual development of interactive narratives;
    • Understand the need to adapt multimedia content to different devices and platforms;
    • Conceive and produce narratives appropriate to the specificity of each project;
    • Understand the advantages of audiovisuals for immersive communication;
    • Think of digital storytelling as an effective and complex communication tool;
    • Analyze potential audiovisual resources and identify their effects as producers of perceptions and affections on the receiver;
    • Adapt and create digital content in the communication of stories;
    • Analyze and decide multimedia resources best suited to the purpose of the story.

    - Georg Dutschke

    It is intended that students can learn to structure a digital business project. Specifically, how to develop the conceptual model, business model, validate the concept, estimate its sustainability, how to propose it to potential investors.

    - Jaime Lourenço

    • Acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge that enable the observation, analysis and explanation of news content and respective cross-media frameworks;
    • Develop a critical perspective on media frameworks in the new media ecosystem;
    • Mastering the criteria for newsworthiness of events and the concepts of scheduling and news framing;
    • Understand the visibility of the themes in the media (and respective supports) and what are the inherent justifications of these journalistic frameworks;
    • Analyze framing and agenda-setting concepts in the light of a media ecosystem focused on digital convergence;
    • Study analytical models and methodological tools for analyzing journalistic content from case studies.

    - Alberto Arons de Carvalho

    It is intended that the students will be able to analyze the public policies for the media in the European and international spaces, the evolution of the public policies for the media in Portugal, to understand the relations between the public policies for the communication and the policies, and to study the consequences of technological evolution in the definition of public policies.

    - Maria do Carmo Picarra

    It is intended that students are able to discuss concepts/postulates/authors that frame and problematize the identity conceptions underlying the constitution of media fields in Portuguese in a well-founded way.

    - Bruno Reis

    Planning research: from formatting to scientific language; strengths and limitations of the Dissertation and the Final Project; steps of the methodological procedure; discussion of the final work plan: debate and reflection on the adopted procedures.
