The Degree in Sports Management is a strategic bet that reinforces the positioning of the Autonomous University of Lisbon and the Department of Economic and Business Sciences. Of the various degrees available in the Department of Economic and Business Sciences, the Degree in Sports Management complements the training offer in the areas of Management. The motivation for its creation was due to the degree of employability of former students of degrees in Management, as well as the return of their employers.

The Degree in Sport Management presents a demanding Curriculum Plan with two dominant scientific areas, Management and Sport, allowing strong foundations in both scientific areas, which, compared to similar study cycles, existing in reference institutions in national and international territory, will allow Autonomous students to easily integrate professionally and continue their training.

Students of the Degree in Sport Management will have the opportunity to contact directly with partner sports organizations, national and foreign, in loco through study visits, field work, practical cases and other works that will allow them to get closer each year professional reality, encouraging the construction of your network. It is intended that students acquire general and specific skills in the areas of management and sport, deepening the scientific and technical knowledge specific to these scientific areas, developing the ability to solve problems in new situations or in broad and multidisciplinary contexts in project management. sport, stimulating the ability to create their own business in sport management and promoting autonomy and maturity in the acquisition of new knowledge and interest and taste for study and autonomous learning throughout life.

Our commitment is to train students with technical, behavioral and conceptual skills so that as a team we can stimulate the realization of our students' life projects.

    SYLLABUS

    - Vera Pedragosa

    • Know the main management terminology;
    • Acquire basic management skills: planning, organizing, leading and controlling;
    • Identify and understand organizational models;
    • Understand the role of different organizational structures and their surroundings;
    • Mastering control and performance indicators;
    • Perform critical analysis of case studies.

    Mathematics I
    6 ECTS

    - Antonio Jose Goncalves

    • Review and consolidate the complete study of real variable real functions and differential calculus in R;
    • Learn differential and integral calculus, and their fundamental theorems;
    • Develop rigor in the oral and written formulation of logical-mathematical reasoning;
    • Ability to relate mathematical formalism with the notations used in Sport Management Curricular Units and their applications;
    • Develop autonomy, responsibility and study method in mathematics and originality in solving more difficult problems.

    - Luis Alves Rita

    • Understand the basic concepts of accounting, acquiring skills that allow reading and interpreting financial statements;
    • Assimilate the economic and social importance of accounting, relating it to the professional activities possibly carried out by a future graduate in Sports Management;
    • Know the institutional framework of accounting, identifying the bodies that regulate it;
    • Identify the financial statements and the main characteristics of each one;
    • Know the conceptual framework of financial reporting and, consequently, the objectives of financial statements, their users, the assumptions that govern their preparation, as well as the existing recognition and measurement criteria;
    • Knowing how to account for the operations inherent to the main business cycles.

    - Alexandre Master

    • Know the phenomena associated with the genesis of Sport and Physical Activity;

    - Antonio Jose Goncalves

    • Generalize the study of real variable functions to functions with more than one variable, developing methods of representation and visualization in three-dimensional space;
    • Extend the theory of differential calculus in R to functions with more than one variable, with a view to optimizing these functions;
    • Develop integration techniques in dimensions greater than 1, with special emphasis on the calculation of volumes, areas and the theorems of Stokes and Gauss, fundamental to the study of electromagnetism;
    • Start studying Linear Algebra through matrices and the classic algorithm for solving systems of linear equations;
    • Develop the abstract study of spaces and linear transformations, and study the application of Linear Algebra to solving systems of linear differential equations.

    - Pedro Pires Lima

    • Carry out the calculation of interest in any capitalization scheme;
    • Calculate the face value of bills and promissory notes in credit sales;
    • Determining the charges for discounting and reforming bills;
    • Carry out capital equivalence;
    • Determining the various types of financial income;
    • Develop loan amortization tables.

    - Paulo Malico

    • A deeper understanding of how the social context affects the sporting phenomenon;
    • The specificity of this same phenomenon in the context of contemporary societies and, in particular, in the Portuguese social space;
    • The acquisition of these concepts should, on the other hand, be associated with the development of:
      • critical analysis skills, fundamental in social contexts marked by constant change, uncertainty and the extension of interdependencies on a global scale;
      • a more detailed knowledge about the current state of the Portuguese sports field.

    • Master the main theories of sport psychology;
    • Use specific sport psychology management tools;
    • Seek up-to-date and relevant empirical research in the field of sport psychology;
    • Use the critical spirit by deepening the specific reading of the area, such as scientific articles, among others;
    • To reflect on the limits of intervention of sport psychology for non-psychologists.

    - Valter Pinheiro

    • Know the organizations and interest groups that make up the sports system in Portugal and understand their role in the functioning of that system;
    • Know the main international organizations and their role in the international sporting order and their influence on the national organization;
    • Know public sports policies and obtain some conceptual and operational competence in this domain;
    • Understand the importance of the governance model of sports organizations;
    • Stimulating a critical and creative sense in understanding the realities associated with the organization and functioning of the sports system;
    • Stimulate interest in research and deepening of topics related to the organization and management of sport.

    • Introduce the student to the scope of Economics as a scientific discipline in order to understand how consumers and producers act;
    • Understand the functioning of markets;
    • Acquire basic knowledge of micro and macroeconomics, in order to facilitate the understanding of the economy as a whole;
    • Understand the economic analysis of law.

    - Marcos Ferasso

    • Analyze and discuss the causes and consequences of people's (dys)functional behaviors in organizations, including a comparative analysis of different structural models and their implications for people's satisfaction and productivity;
    • Acquire a theoretical understanding of critical organizational variables to explain human behavior in organizations;
    • Master and effectively apply the main constructs and tools of organizational analysis;
    • Understand the dynamics of groups in an organizational context, knowing how to interpret and distinguish the differences between the concepts of Group and Team, as well as Leadership and Management;
    • Develop an integrated perspective of the relationships between people and the competitiveness of organizations;
    • Develop critical thinking in the analysis of processes and other organizational phenomena in the specific context of sport.

    Statistics II

    • Consolidate and generalize the knowledge acquired in Statistics I;
    • Working with variables and multidimensional models;
    • Interpret results and apply their knowledge to practical cases in their area of work;

    • Identification of the general bases of marketing;
    • Applying the foundations of marketing to sport: public administration, private for-profit organizations and private not-for-profit organizations;
    • Identification of different studies to collect information from different players in the sports market;
    • Knowledge of different consumption behaviors and the production of products and services in sport;
    • Formulate segmentation and positioning strategies based on the study of the general and specific sport market;
    • Understand and apply different marketing-mix strategies in sport and in its specificity the sponsorship strategy;
    • Understand the brand concept and its importance in the sporting context;
    • Identify the concepts of quality and satisfaction from the perspective of the production and use of sports products and services;
    • Development of a marketing plan encouraging teamwork and interest in research.

    - Renato Leite

    • Clarify the fundamental concepts of human resources management and its role in the global management of the organization;
    • Highlight the major technical areas of intervention of a human resources manager;
    • Outline human capital management policies;
    • Develop the main themes within the scope of human resources management applied to organizations in Portugal.

    - Gonçalo Simões João

    • Promote student work in order to achieve and integrate basic knowledge of the role of computing and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in organizations;
    • Present the value of Organizational Information Systems as a decisive contribution to the formulation, implementation and strategic control;
    • Present the historical, evolutionary, analytical and strategic vision of the concept of Informatics, presenting the specificity of its activities and techniques in the field of Management.

    - Paulo Ventura

    • Acquire the theory and methodology appropriate to the knowledge and criticism of economic knowledge applied to sport;
    • Identify, select and evaluate sources of documentary and bibliographic information regarding the Portuguese sporting reality;
    • Develop techniques, attitudes and behaviors based on learning skills;
    • Know the economic fundamentals of sports markets.

    - Carlos Alves Pereira

    • Design, analyze and evaluate projects in the context of the sports system;
    • Know the main concepts of project management and how they are contextualized in the different sectors of the sports system;
    • Identify the key stakeholders in the main sectors of the sports system;
    • Know the main planning methodologies in project management;
    • Understand and use project management monitoring methodologies;
    • Use the available IT tools to support project planning and management.

    - Paulo Ventura

    • Understand the influence of the political philosophy of the different regimes on the conceptions of physical education and sport;
    • Characterize public intervention in sport in Portugal and in the world;
    • Understand the relevance of free time, sport and quality of life of citizens/citizens for the promotion of public sports policies;
    • Master the legal duties of the public service based on current legislation;
    • Know the factors and strategies of sports development at central and municipal level;
    • Reflect and carry out a critical analysis on public policies for sports development.

    • Acquire knowledge in the domain of the most relevant techniques in the area of Organization and Management of Events;
    • Allow the student, independently, to develop successful methodologies, applying project management techniques;
    • Master the various areas of development of an Event and the respective critical factors;
    • Develop and consolidate techniques that contribute to professional success;
    • Master the control and evaluation indicators;
    • Perform critical analysis of case studies.

    Finance I
    6 ECTS

    - Lucas Avezum

    • Allow students to understand the role of the financial system and capital markets in the economy, as well as their structure and main functions, the way they are organized and how they work. It is intended, in particular, that students get to know the process of issuing and trading securities in the financial markets;
    • Provide the main principles, concepts, models, techniques and other analytical tools that guide the valuation of financial assets and the decision-making process for allocating investors' resources, addressing, in particular, the fundamentals of the theory and structure of interest rates, the capital market theory, the binomial risk and return and the main models for the valuation of financial assets.

    - Paulo Ventura

    • Understand the relevance of the act of managing sports spaces in satisfying the sporting needs of citizens;
    • Know the basic terminology and classification of sports facilities and spaces;
    • Master the criteria inherent to the implementation of sports facilities and complementary spaces;
    • Understand the importance of the comfort of sports facilities for the quality of services provided;
    • Acquire skills in managing sports spaces and facilities;
    • Reflect and carry out a critical analysis on the impact of sports management acts on society.

    - Paulo Ventura

    • Identify the different types of entrepreneurship;
    • Conceiving entrepreneurship as a career option generating personal, national and international wealth;
    • Trigger ideas and identify opportunities in different economic, social or cultural contexts;
    • Conceiving entrepreneurship as a creative and innovative process;
    • Identify different forms of financing;
    • Identify and structure a business plan;
    • Conduct business feasibility studies;
    • Interpret a business plan economically and financially;
    • Conduct evaluation studies of a business plan.

    Taxation
    6 ECTS

    - José Brito Almas

    1. Know the structural aspects of the three main taxes of the tax system, VAT, IRS and IRC, and their relationship with the management of sports entities;
    2. Provide students with fundamental knowledge in the field of corporate taxation, namely: main features of the Portuguese tax system; main notions and rules established in the General Tax Law; theoretical and practical aspects of income taxes from a business perspective; principles inherent to consumption taxation, namely, value added tax;
    3. Understand the importance of taxation in business activities, namely in sports.

    - Vera Pedragosa

    The Degree lasts for three years, spread over six semesters, of which the penultimate one is occupied, for 250 hours, with a curricular internship in a partner sport organization. The objectives are that the internship allows students to apply knowledge and techniques in the field of sport and its management, acquired during the degree that preceded it, so that in real situations future professionals can not only improve their level of knowledge as well as improving the standard of performance.

    Sport ethics
    4 ECTS

    - Paulo Ventura

    • Understand and reflect on the importance of morality, ethics and deontology from a personal and professional perspective;
    • Distinguish the concepts of ethics, morality, law and conscience in the light of an individual and cultural ethical relativism;
    • Identify the fundamental normative theories that contribute to the articulated understanding of the principles of ethics;
    • Know and discuss the issues leading to the construction of an individual and professional ethics;
    • Formulate and know how to use the various types of ethical and deontological rationality, identifying the central elements, objectives and criteria of formulation, developing the ability to apply them in the context of Sport;
    • Develop a complex, holistic and analytical look at ethics and deontology applied to the Management of Sports Organizations;
    • Apply the guiding ethical principles of the Sport Manager profession.

    Finance II
    6 ECTS

    - Pedro Pires Ribeiro

    • Provide a solid knowledge base that promotes understanding of the fundamentals, concepts, principles, models and other analytical tools that support the analysis, modelling, preparation, structuring and implementation of companies' financial decisions;
    • Prepare for intervention in the management of the company's finances using the best practices currently available;
    • The program addresses the context, the main conceptual foundations and strategic issues associated with making corporate financial decisions; the topics of diagnosis and financial planning as instruments of corporate finance; and financing, capital structure and cash flow distribution decisions to owners.
