General Information about Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL)

UAL is a private university set up in 1985. It is located right in the center of Lisbon, just off the main Avenue (Avenida da Liberdade) and within walking distance from the historical center and the lively Bairro Alto, where the best nightlife in Lisbon is to be found, always much appreciated by both Portuguese and International students.

UAL has quite a few international students, some of whom residing permanently in Lisbon, while others study with us for one or two semesters, as part of our agreements with international partners.

In total, UAL has about 4000 students. Most courses (not architecture) offer students the option to study during the day or in the evening, given that a lot of our students also work during the day. The number of Erasmus has been increasing steadily since the programme started at UAL. This year we have about 80 Exchange students.

The University’s main building is located at a former 17th-century palace, and this is where most classes take place. The Architecture department and classrooms are located in a distinct part of the city in the neighborhood of Campo de Ourique. Both sites are easily accessed by bus and metro.
