Language of Instruction:

Our courses are offered in Portuguese, with some exceptions (some subjects in years 4 and 5 of the master degree in architecture are offered in English. If numbers allow it, the departments may create an extra class for Erasmus+/International students where some topics might be taught in English. International students are normally given the opportunity to write assignments, tests and exams in English. However, this needs to be agreed individually with each lecturer.

Portuguese Language Courses

Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa provides free Portuguese classes to International students. There is one intensive course starting around mid-September, 2 weeks before the official start of the academic year. This course takes place every day in the morning (3 hours), and includes some cultural activities. There is also an extensive course taught over the entire semester, attracting 6 ECTS. The intensive course is taught only in the first semester. Students have a choice of attending one course in just one semester (6 ECTS) or two courses, one per semester, thus gaining 12 ECTS if they complete the courses successfully.

If you are interested in attending a course, please send us an email to erasmus@autonoma.pt indicating your level in Portuguese to help us plan the class numbers. Please be aware that students are expected to have a B1 level in Portuguese prior to starting their classes with us. We do not require a certificate.

In addition, incoming students are strongly recommended to make full use of the Online Linguistic Support (OLS) made available to all students by the European Commission. Portuguese will be one of the available languages in 2017-18. For additional information about this tool, students are advised to contact the international office of their respective universities.
